Information on Christchurch
Christchurch was named in 1848 by the Canterbury Association which settled in the surrounding province of Canterbury. It became a city by Royal Charter on 31 July 1856, officially making it the oldest established city in New Zealand.
The Mãori name for Christchurch is Õtautahi, which means "the place of Tautahi".
In recent years, the city of Christchurch and its surrounding region was ravaged by many earthquakes. On 4 September 2010, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck without causing any fatalities. The next earthquake struck the city on 22 February 2011 with a magnitude 6.3 earthquake causing 185 people to lose their lives. Many aftershocks of various magnitudes were felt until late in the year. On 2 January 2012 Christchurch was rattled by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake once more.
