Flydubai becomes the world's first airline to get a fibre to the screen (FTTS) in-flight entertainment system, a top official said ahead of the launch in November.

Gaith Al Gaith, CEO of flydubai, said the "revolutionary" system will be available on 44 of the airline's B737-800NGs, the first of which will arrive end-October.

In-flight entertainment will be available as an optional extra just like baggage and meals, he said, adding that passengers may choose from a wide range of options depending on their preference and how much they want to spend.

The FTTS system from the US-based manufacturer Lumexis uses fibre optics instead of traditional copper piping, Al Gaith said, noting that it is lighter and reduces the overall cost of the system. "Any reduction in weight reduces our fuel costs and therefore ensures that we can keep our ticket prices low," he said.
