The Southern most city in New Zealand is also known as "The City of Water and Lights" thanks to the spectacular aurora australis (Southern Lights), 16 hours of daylight during the summer and horizontal rain!
Invercargill has an easily accessible public transport system, with Freebie busses running free of charge during weekdays. This provides you with an inexpensive way to explore all the hidden gems within this city. There are many excellent shops and restaurants, museums and art galleries as well as the popular Splash Palace, an indoor Olympic size swimming pool which boasts the title of "The most Versatile Swimming Pool in New Zealand". Ten minutes away from Invercargill, you will find Oreti Beach where you can whizz around on a Blo-Kart.
Thirty minutes farther is the port town of Bluff, famous for its delectable oysters and fascinating heritage. Steward Island is a short ferry ride away, which is home to Rakiura Nature reserve. Have a go on a kayak, or try your hand at fishing.
Conveniently located on the Southern Scenic Route, Invercargill is a great base to explore some of the more "off the beaten" track destinations. The rugged and densely forested Catlins coastline is best known for Nugget Point with its 140 year old light house, Purakauni Falls with its magnificent three tiers, majestic Cathedral Caves and Curio Bay where you can explore the 180 million year old Petrified Forest.
Invercargill's people are well known for their friendliness and hospitality. Even though it is the commercial centre of the wide expanse which is Southland, you can enjoy the convenience of a city, without the traffic jams and noise!
