Information on Cochin
Kochi, known as Cochin during colonial times, is a major port city situated on the south-west coast of the Indian peninsula and part of the state of Kerala. The city lies about 220km north of the state capital of Thiruvananthapuram and about 180km south of Kozhikode.
The strategic position of the city has earned it the name "Queen of the Arabian Sea", due to its spice trading through the 14th century, and "Gateway to Kerala".
Kochi is the base of the Southern Naval Command of the Indian Navy and the state headquarters of the Indian Coast Guard.

An Emirates flight from Dubai to Kochi/Cochin loses altitude from 20,000 to 5,000 feet (over the Arabian Sea) before the pilot regains control. A number of passengers and the crew suffered minor injuries after the aeroplane fell into an airpocket. The plane landed at Kochi under full emergency conditions. |

Emirates increases its flights between Dubai and Cochin from 3 to 5 a week. Emirates is scheduled to fly non-stop between on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. "In the four months since its inception, Emirates has received an excellent response. This has led us to an increase in flights to Kerala. We will continue to develop our India network to support customer demand and provide our passengers with the services they require.
