Colombo is the largest city in Sri Lanka, located on the west coast of the island. It is a bustling and vibrant place with a great variety of both modern and colonial buildings.
The city was known to ancient traders around 2,000 years ago, due to its large harbour and strategic position along the East to West sea trade routes. The city was named the capital of Sri Lanka when it was incorporated into the British Empire in 1815 and remained in that position until the country's independence in 1948.
Famous landmarks in Colombo include the Galle Face Green, the Viharamahadevi Park, Mount Lavinia beach and the National Museum.
