Safety Tip
Suicide bombs often go off early in the morning, as bombers spend all night psyching themselves up, then say prayers at dawn, before doing their bombing. So sleep-in and venture out of your hotel after 11am or so, thus drastically reducing your chances of ending up at the wrong place and the wrong time.
Stay in hotel rooms above the ground floor, as they're likely to be the first to see action in the event of a terrorist attack. Avoid hotel rooms which are higher than fire engine ladders can reach, in case there's a fire or need for rescue for another reason.
Erbil Accommodation
When staying in Erbil, we recommend booking a room at the Tower Hotel. It is located within walking distance of the old citadel and various markets. As one of the oldest hotels in the city, the Tower Hotel has an interesting architecture. The rooms are small (but cosy) and if you enjoy a view, ask for a room on a higher floor facing the citadel.
